Tsunami
The tsunami of December 26, 2005 brought unparalleled destruction. It leveled trees, homes and any structure in its way.
The WMF-led Tsunami Relief Project (TRP) took place January - July 2005 and was facilitated by a rotating group of WMF staff who temporarily relocated from their countries of service in India and Nepal to serve in Sri Lanka for several months. The TRP partnered with local grassroots organizations in both India and Sri Lanka. Through those partnerships, WMF was able to send monies that had been raised through The Justice Fund. WMF also sent volunteers to help rebuild homes of victims in Galle, Sri Lanka, through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka.
In total, 30 volunteers, 11 Servant Team members (India & Nepal), 12 full-time WMF staff members and one WMF board member participated in the project.
The TRP was complete in July 2005 with the return of the final volunteer team. It was a great joy for us to be a small part of the lives of the survivors who extended much hospitality, friendship and love toward us. We are in prayer regarding the potential of a long-term WMF presence in Sri Lanka.
