Special News

This summer, Romania was affected by wave after wave of floods, much of them in the county of Galaţi. The hard rains began in eastern Romania in April, inundating much of the country and destroying crops.

Torrential rains hit Vrancea and Galaţi counties in July, flooding the Siret River to 30 times its normal capacity. The water rose six to 10 feet across miles of agriculture and homes, carrying away bridges, dams, train lines, roads and houses. Although nearly 500 people were saved by helicopters and boats, at least 15 people drowned. Thousands have been left with nothing.

The city of Galaţi, where WMF serves, was not hit as badly as the countryside. No casualties or home losses were reported within the city.

The street boys and WMF staff were stranded at their summer camp because of the severe flooding in the country but all remained safe from harm. Everyone made it back to the city of Galaţi safely, thanks to the generous transportation assistance provided by a local Romanian Christian organization.

Fortunately, the younger children in the WMF program went to summer camp a week before the floods hit and were safe in the city during the flooding.
