Nepal
Nepal has been shaped by an atmosphere of isolation and resistance to the rest of the world. Because of this isolation, it is one of the poorest countries in the world
Vision Statement
Our calling is expressed through transformational ministries of compassion among women, children and youth and unifying relationships with the poor and the local church. We are committed to making Jesus known by upholding the dignity of women, through the prophetic values of sonship and daughterhood, through the empowerment of Nepali leadership, and through building unity among other believers in Kathmandu who share a similar vision.
Karuna Ghar – Home for Girls
Gautam and Rekha Rai are the parents of this family of girls. Karuna Ghar (Home of Compassion) provides a hope-filled future for girls from backgrounds of abuse and neglect. The Rais currently have eight children.
Prem Ghar – Home for Elderly Women
At Prem Ghar (Home of Love) Jyoti Bhattarai and her family continue to care for elderly women who have been widowed or abandoned by their families. Jyoti serves the ammas (mothers) diligently, and the ammas have found love and life at the home, where they occupy their time tending the home’s small herd of goats, raising vegetables, and being grandmothers to the Bhattarais’ three daughters.
Elderly Care
In addition to the three ammas they care for at Prem Ghar, Jyoti and her husband, Shiva, operate an outreach to the elderly, assisting women in need who are unable to live at Prem Ghar. The Bhattarais care for 12 elderly women around the Kathmandu Valley, assisting them with housing needs, medical care, food and clothing.
Kripaa Sadhan – Drug Rehabilitation Home for Men
Kripaa Sadhan (Home of Mercy) is a home, which started in response to several of the men whom WMF Nepal staff have been working with over the past several years making a step of faith in Jesus Christ. All of these men were formerly addicted to IV drugs and living in the street. Recognizing their need for community as they overcome their addictions and grow in their faith, WMF Nepal staff began working in partnership with their local church, The Living Church, in providing a loving, supportive and disciplined family atmosphere. This is a place of miracles, in which these young men grow daily in their walks with God.
About 80% of the men living in Kripaa Sadhan are HIV positive. Another facet of the ministry of Kripaa Sadhan has been that of preparation for death. In the spring of 2006 the first member of the Kripaa Sadhan family went to be with Jesus after succumbing to complications resulting from AIDS.
Ministry Among Street Children
The WMF Nepal staff continues to spend time on the streets with children, young men and women. The staff acts as the “social workers” for the street children, providing counseling, first aid, home visits, family reintegration, jail visits and hospital visits.
