Bolivia

According to GNP ratings, Bolivia is the 3rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the 2nd poorest country in Latin America. Although 95% of the population claims to be Catholic, it is a faith deeply tied to ancient Incan and Andean rituals, which celebrate animism (a belief that there are spirits in all of nature) and spiritism (a works-based religion that maintains peace with the spirit world).

WMF Bolivia Vision Statement
We desire to see holistic transformation through Christ Jesus for those who prostitute in Bolivia. In community we seek to practice and proclaim the Kingdom of God among persons affected by prostitution, through relationship and opportunities for transformation.

Street Ministry
For five years now, WMF staff and volunteers have continued to visit 15 brothels bi-weekly in the former slum city of El Alto. There they offer a ministry of presence, compassion and encouragement, along with an invitation to the House of Hope.

The House of Hope – Community Center
Located one block from the red-light district, La Casa de Esperanza (The House of Hope) offers hospitality, respite, medical support, tutoring and child care to women in prostitution and their families. It has become a place of hope, love and respect – a refuge – where women are challenged to seek the Lord’s best for their lives. Because the building has become “home” for so many, the Bolivia community strongly desires to purchase the building in 2007.
